Defending champions Nigeria will face Jamaica in the Unity Cup final on Saturday at The Valley Stadium in London, with the Super Eagles aiming to retain their title against the Reggae Boyz.
Head coach Eric Chelle has hinted at possible changes to his lineup and tactics despite Nigeria’s impressive 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in the semi-finals. Jamaica also secured a 2-0 win against India to book their place in the final.
The two teams met in last year’s final, where Nigeria emerged victorious after a dramatic penalty shootout. Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze scored for the Super Eagles, while Kaheim Dixon and Jon Russell found the net for Jamaica. After a 2-2 draw, Nigeria converted all five penalties, with Jamaica missing one, to retain the trophy.
Speaking ahead of the final, Chelle stressed his team’s determination to win.
“Penalties are part of football, but our mentality is always to win. I have instilled a winning culture in this team, and the players are hungry for success,” he said.
One of the standout performers for Nigeria has been debutant Femi Azeez, who scored twice in the semi-final victory over Zimbabwe. The forward became the first player to score a brace on his senior debut for Nigeria since Mathias Obianika achieved the feat against Burkina Faso 55 years ago.
Nigeria will be seeking a fourth Unity Cup title when they take on Jamaica in what promises to be an exciting final.
