The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has achieved another significant milestone with the approval of 14 new undergraduate programmes by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The approval was communicated in a letter dated June 16, 2026, signed by the Director of Academic Planning, Abubakar M. Girei, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the NUC.
According to the Commission, the approval followed a successful resource verification exercise carried out by a panel of experts. The newly approved programmes will be offered on a full-time basis at the University’s main campus beginning from the 2026/2027 academic session.
The approved programmes include B.Sc. Social Work, Criminology and Security Studies, Cyber Security, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Psychology, Procurement Management, Entrepreneurship Studies, Actuarial Science, Film and Multimedia Studies, Broadcasting Journalism, Fisheries and Aquaculture, and Agricultural Economics.
With the approval in place, prospective candidates will be able to apply for the programmes in the ongoing 2026/2027 admission exercise once they are uploaded to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).
Interested and qualified applicants seeking admission into any of the newly introduced programmes will also be able to apply through the appropriate change-of-programme process and be considered for admission.
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja, Professor Gbenga Solomon Ibileye, described the approval as a strong endorsement of the University’s continued growth, academic expansion and commitment to innovation.
He stated that the new programmes are in line with the institution’s strategic goal of producing graduates with the knowledge, skills and competencies needed to tackle modern-day challenges and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Professor Ibileye highlighted the importance of the approval in strengthening the University’s capacity to provide training in emerging technology-driven fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cyber Security and Software Engineering, which are increasingly influencing the global workforce and competitiveness.
The Vice-Chancellor reiterated the University’s commitment to investing in quality teaching, research, infrastructure and human capital development to ensure the successful implementation and sustainability of the programmes.
He also expressed gratitude to the National Universities Commission for its confidence in the institution and assured stakeholders that Federal University Lokoja would continue to maintain high academic standards while creating more opportunities for students across various disciplines.
The approval marks a major step forward in the University’s efforts to expand access to quality higher education, enhance its academic offerings in key sectors and further establish itself as a centre of excellence in teaching, research and innovation in Nigeria.
