Gov. Ododo Approves Free Health Insurance for Sickle Cell Survivors

As part of activities marking the World Sickle Cell Day, Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has approved free health insurance coverage for all survivors of sickle cell across the state.

This is part of the administration’s policy of expanding access to quality healthcare for vulnerable groups in the state.

The approval is also aimed at reducing the financial burden associated with the management of the condition and improving access to essential healthcare services for affected persons.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo.

Governor Ododo said the initiative underscores the determination of his administration to build a healthier society where vulnerable citizens receive the care and support they deserve.

He described sickle cell disorder as a major public health challenge, stressing the need for increased awareness, early diagnosis, proper management, and stronger support systems for individuals living with the condition.

The Governor maintained that no citizen should be denied access to healthcare because of financial limitations, assuring that his administration would continue to implement policies and programmes that promote the wellbeing of residents.

Under the scheme, enrolled beneficiaries will receive health insurance coverage through accredited healthcare facilities across the state, significantly reducing out-of-pocket medical expenses and improving health outcomes.

Governor Ododo commended parents, caregivers, healthcare professionals, advocacy groups, and development partners for their contributions to supporting survivors of sickle cell.

He also urged residents to embrace genotype testing and genetic counselling as important measures for preventing the spread of the disease and reducing its impact on families and communities.

The Governor commitment to strengthening the healthcare sector and ensuring that every resident has access to affordable and quality healthcare services in line with the people-centred development agenda towards achieving universal healthcare coverage.

As Kogi joins the global community in commemorating World Sickle Cell Day, Governor Ododo assured survivors that they remain a priority of his administration, which will continue to implement programmes and policies aimed at improving quality of life for all persons in the state.
