The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has unveiled 20 electric and solar-powered tricycles as part of efforts to promote sustainable transportation, with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gbenga Solomon Ibileye, announcing plans to procure an additional 50 electric buses to improve mobility across the institution’s campuses.
The unveiling ceremony, held on Monday, drew officials of the Kogi State Government, university management, staff, students and private sector partners, marking a significant step in the institution’s transition to environmentally friendly transportation.
Speaking at the event, the Secretary to the Kogi State Government (SSG), Dr. Folashade Arike Ayoade, commended the university for embracing clean energy solutions, describing the initiative as a bold investment in sustainable development. She said Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and the Kogi State Government are pleased with the university’s decision to champion electric mobility and green transportation.
According to Ayoade, the project positions the Federal University Lokoja among forward-looking institutions committed to environmental sustainability and innovation in public transportation.
The electric tricycles were procured through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the university and House of Destiny (HOD) Global Services, a collaboration aimed at providing efficient, affordable and eco-friendly transportation for members of the university community.
Professor Ibileye said the initiative forms part of the university’s broader vision of addressing transportation challenges while reducing carbon emissions. He noted that plans are already underway to acquire 50 electric buses to further strengthen movement across the university’s campuses.
The Vice-Chancellor has consistently emphasised the need to improve transportation infrastructure within the institution as student enrolment and administrative activities continue to grow.
The introduction of the electric tricycles is expected to provide students and staff with cleaner, safer and more reliable transportation while supporting Nigeria’s growing drive toward renewable energy and sustainable development.
