The Senate Committee on Sports Development has summoned the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) to explain the country’s declining fortunes in international football.
The lawmakers’ decision follows Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons’ inability to secure a direct qualification ticket for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The committee expressed concern that increased government funding and interventions in the sports sector had not translated into improved performances by the country’s national teams.
The NFF and NSC are expected to appear before the committee to explain the factors responsible for the repeated setbacks and outline measures being taken to restore Nigeria’s position in international football.
The latest development comes amid increased scrutiny of the administration and finances of Nigerian football. In July, the Senate committee had questioned the NFF and NSC over their failure to honour previous invitations concerning their finances and operations.
The committee had warned that continued disregard for legislative oversight could attract disciplinary action.
Meanwhile, the NFF has established a fact-finding committee to investigate the poor performances of Nigeria’s national teams, particularly the Super Falcons’ failure to secure direct qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
The Senate’s latest intervention is expected to increase pressure on football authorities to address the administrative and technical challenges affecting the national teams and restore confidence in Nigerian football.
