The Director-General of the Kogi State Pension Commission, Hajia Mariam Abedo, has urged civil servants in the state to begin planning for retirement early by saving and developing alternative sources of income while still in service.
Abedo gave the charge during the 2026 Kogi State Civil Service Award Night held on Wednesday at the Government House, Lokoja.
She commended Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for his efforts toward improving the welfare of civil servants in the state.
Abedo said the Governor had demonstrated concern for workers’ welfare through efforts to address issues relating to promotions, salary arrears, leave arrears and other outstanding obligations.
Abedo urged workers to take responsibility for their financial future by saving part of their earnings and establishing sustainable sources of income before retirement.
“Please plan for your retirement. No matter what you are recieving, please save from it and start a business before you retire,” she said.
Abedo cautioned civil servants against waiting until retirement before starting businesses or making major investments, stressing that preparations for life after service should begin while they are still actively employed.
