Rosemary Adukwu, a councillor representing Ogugu Ward in Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State, has died in the custody of suspected kidnappers, days after she was abducted on a trip to trade in Anambra State.
Adukwu was reportedly seized on September 30 while travelling to Onitsha Market. Gunmen are said to have stopped the commercial vehicle she was in around Oji River, between Enugu and Anambra states, and taken her away. The other passengers were left unharmed.
Olamaboro Local Government Chairman Ameh Williams announced her death on Friday, saying it was confirmed on Thursday while she was still in captivity.
A family source said the abductors never contacted relatives to demand a ransom before her death was confirmed.
The source added that the vehicle’s driver, and a person who answered a call to the councillor’s phone, have been arrested and are helping security operatives with their investigation.
The President-General of the Ogugu District Union, Deacon Samuel Ige Agada, condemned the killing and called it a painful loss to the community.
