US President Donald Trump has warned that he could face another impeachment attempt if Republicans lose control of Congress in the November 2026 midterm elections.

Speaking at a political rally in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Trump said he had seen comments from a congressman suggesting that Democrats would seek to impeach him.

“I’m going to be impeached. They’re going to impeach me,” Trump said, questioning why lawmakers would pursue his removal from office.

The president suggested that the prospect of impeachment was linked to the possibility of Democrats regaining control of Congress after the midterm elections.

Trump has faced impeachment twice during his political career, with both cases ending in acquittal by the US Senate.

His latest comments come as Democrats prepare for a highly competitive midterm election, with control of the House of Representatives and Senate at stake.

Several Democrats have already discussed impeachment as a possible response to Trump’s policies and actions.

In April, Democratic Representative John Larson introduced 13 articles of impeachment against Trump, accusing him of abuses including circumventing Congress over military actions and the use of federal power.

Other Democrats have also discussed preparing impeachment proceedings if they regain control of the House, although party leaders have not committed to launching such a process.

Trump’s remarks have therefore placed the issue of impeachment back into the centre of the US political debate as both parties intensify their campaigns ahead of the November elections.
