Kogi Joins Federal, Global Partners Against Flood, Erosion

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has pledged strong support for the Nigeria Climate Adaptation, Erosion and Watershed Project backed by the European Investment Bank (NEWMAP-EIB), an intervention designed to curb erosion, flooding and environmental degradation nationwide.

Speaking at the official launch of the project in Abuja, where he was represented by his deputy, Comrade Joel Salifu, the governor described the programme as a “lifeline” for communities battling the destructive effects of erosion and flooding.

He noted that the initiative, backed by the European Investment Bank (EIB), demonstrates the value of collaboration between federal and state governments and international partners.

Governor Ododo hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritising climate adaptation, saying the administration’s leadership has given states renewed confidence to tackle the pressing challenge of environmental resilience.

According to him, the NEWMAP-EIB scheme represents not only infrastructure development but also a safeguard for lives, agriculture and livelihoods.

He underscored Kogi State’s vulnerability as the Confluence State, where Rivers Niger and Benue meet, stressing that flooding and erosion have continued to threaten farms, homes, schools and health centres.

Ododo assured that his administration would continue to mobilise local communities, promote responsible land use and apply lessons from the project to strengthen resilience in Kogi state.

The governor also urged citizens to play active role in protecting the environment through tree planting, waste management and other sustainable practices.

He praised the European Investment Bank for its technical and financial contributions, while calling for transparency and accountability in project implementation across Nigeria.

Governor Ododo further noted that the NEWMAP initiative is more than fighting erosion; it is about protecting Nigeria’s natural heritage, ensuring food security, and safeguarding the future of generations yet unborn.
