The Kogi State Government has reiterated its commitment to intensifying the crackdown on criminal elements across the state, assuring residents that sustained security operations are underway to restore peace and rescue kidnapped victims.
The assurance was given on Saturday by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, who said security agencies are actively tracking criminal networks, with major operations already in progress to secure the release of abducted persons.
Fanwo’s statement followed a recent protest by residents of the Kabba/Bunu area, who demonstrated against persistent banditry and insecurity in their communities. The protesters lamented that frequent attacks have forced many residents to flee their homes, leaving several villages deserted, and called for urgent government intervention to prevent further escalation.
Addressing the concerns, the commissioner said the state government fully understands the trauma faced by families of kidnapped victims and remains deeply concerned about their safety and well-being.
“We understand the trauma faced by families of kidnapped victims, and we are very concerned about their well-being. The governor has invested heavily in ensuring that the state has the capacity to crush criminal elements,” Fanwo said.
He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support, as well as the National Security Adviser, Service Chiefs, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, the Inspector General of Police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for their continued backing in the fight against crime in Kogi State.
According to Fanwo, the state government is placing increased emphasis on preventive security measures and remains resolute in its determination to rescue all persons currently held by criminals.
“We will make sure every Kogite in their hands is rescued. We also sympathise with families that have lost loved ones. We are making progress, and the security situation has improved significantly,” he stated.
While acknowledging that peaceful protest against insecurity is lawful, the commissioner cautioned against actions that could introduce political motives into security-related demonstrations.
“We cannot afford to be divided as a people at this moment. We must come together to continue to win this war,” he said.
The state government also commended individuals and stakeholders who have been supporting security agencies and collaborating with government efforts to tackle violent crime. Fanwo specifically praised the member representing Yagba Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Leke Abejide, for providing logistical support to security operations in his constituency.
“He has put his money where his mouth is by matching words with actions. The Kogi State Government appreciates his support and calls on others to defend the people instead of politicising security,” Fanwo said.
He further warned that individuals who disrupt public peace under the guise of protest, as well as their sponsors, would be made to face the full weight of the law.
