Nottingham Forest’s Europa League campaign suffered a major blow on Thursday night as a sequence of costly errors condemned them to defeat away at Braga, leaving their hopes of automatic qualification hanging by a thread.
What had been billed as a pivotal fixture quickly turned into a night to forget, with Forest enduring an own goal, a missed penalty and a red card in a display that drained momentum from their European push.
Sean Dyche’s side travelled to Portugal with genuine belief that a top-eight finish was still within reach, but the loss has all but closed that door.
Even victory against Ferencváros in their final league-phase match now appears unlikely to spare Forest from a two-legged play-off just to reach the knockout stage, a scenario that reflects how sharply their prospects have dimmed.
The defining moment arrived early in the second half when Morgan Gibbs-White failed to convert from the penalty spot. Within 55 seconds, Forest were punished, Ryan Yates inadvertently turning the ball into his own net as Braga capitalised on the sudden swing in momentum. Dyche later described it as “one minute of madness,” lamenting how quickly control slipped from his team’s grasp after a game in which they had rarely looked under serious pressure.
Adding to Forest’s frustration was the manner of Braga’s victory. The Portuguese side did not register a single shot on target, yet still walked away with maximum points, a statistical anomaly that only sharpened the sense of waste for the visitors.
Boos from the travelling supporters at half-time and full-time underlined the disappointment, as Forest once again failed to assert themselves when it mattered most on the European stage.
