Tinubu Approves Major Sports Reform, New Funding System to Begin in 2026

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a major reform of Nigeria’s sports sector, directing federal ministries and agencies to restructure sports funding and make the industry economically productive.

The President revealed the plan on Friday in a post on his verified X account (@officialABAT). He described sports as one of Nigeria’s strongest national assets and a tool for unity and international recognition.

The reforms are part of the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE), aimed at using sports to create jobs, attract investment, boost tourism, and increase Nigeria’s global influence.

Tinubu said his administration will build a stronger sports system through scientific training of elite athletes, grassroots participation, improved sports federations, and hosting international competitions in Nigeria. He emphasized that sports must be properly managed and funded without bureaucratic delays.

He promised a future where athletes are discovered early, well-prepared, and adequately supported, stating that Nigeria will remain competitive on the global stage.

The President noted that Nigerian athletes won 373 medals across different sports in 2025, highlighting successes in athletics, women’s football and basketball, and the Super Eagles’ bronze-medal performance at the 2025 AFCON.

While commending the National Sports Commission (NSC) and its chairman, Malam Shehu Dikko, Tinubu also acknowledged long-standing problems in the sector, including late release of funds and poor sports infrastructure.

To address this, he directed the Ministries of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, and the Budget Office to reset sports funding starting from the 2026 fiscal year. He ordered that once the national budget is approved, funds meant for sports must be released immediately.

He also announced that sports allocations currently spread across different government agencies will be reviewed and merged into a unified funding system under the NSC to improve domestic programmes and international participation.

“Nigerian athletes deserve certainty, not excuses,” the President said, adding that proper funding and planning will strengthen Nigeria’s performance and pride in sports.
