Governor Ododo Charts Kogi’s Path to Rural Electrification for Economic Growth

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has outlined a bold vision for Kogi State’s energy future, placing rural electrification at the heart of his administration’s development strategy. Speaking at a roundtable event in Abuja, the governor emphasized that addressing the state’s energy shortfall is crucial for unlocking the full economic potential of Kogi, which is home to over 5 million residents. He stressed that the current power supply of just 50 MW from the national grid is inadequate, leaving many rural communities without access to reliable electricity.

“The need for transformative action to improve energy access in Kogi State has never been clearer,” Governor Ododo stated. He highlighted that electricity is not just a tool for industrial growth but is foundational for enhancing education, healthcare, and clean water systems in rural areas. “With energy access, we can empower local industries, create jobs, and improve the overall standard of living for our people,” he declared, signaling his commitment to closing the energy gap and fostering a more prosperous future for the state.

The Kogi State Commissioner for Rural and Energy Development, Engr. Abdulmutalib Mohammed, further reinforced the governor’s message, emphasizing the transformative power of electricity in rural areas. “With improved energy access, we can revitalize local economies, enhance productivity, and foster sustainable development,” he said. The commissioner expressed gratitude to the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and other partners for their collaboration in pushing the state’s energy agenda forward, positioning Kogi as a prime candidate for renewable energy solutions.

Mr. Abba Aliyu, Managing Director of the REA, praised Governor Ododo for his forward-thinking approach to energy development. He affirmed that the REA is committed to supporting Kogi State in its electrification efforts, particularly with renewable energy solutions like solar, hydropower, and biomass. Aliyu also pointed out that the state’s vast natural resources give it a unique advantage in harnessing diverse energy sources to meet the needs of its rural communities.

Engr. Doris Uboh, Executive Director of the Rural Electrification Fund, highlighted the success of similar projects across Nigeria, where over ₦5 billion in private investments have been generated, creating thousands of jobs. She expressed confidence that Kogi State’s electrification drive could follow suit, particularly in agriculture, where energy access would boost productivity and enable farmers to adopt modern technologies for crop irrigation and processing.

The event concluded with a clear roadmap for Kogi’s energy future. Governor Ododo unveiled several strategic initiatives, including the establishment of a State Electricity Regulatory Commission and the creation of an investment brochure to attract private sector funding. These efforts are expected to accelerate the electrification of rural areas, bringing reliable power to communities and unlocking vast economic opportunities in agriculture, industry, and beyond. With the support of key stakeholders and a robust policy framework, Kogi State is poised to become a leader in sustainable energy development in Nigeria.
