Leeds Shock Man United at Old Trafford to Boost Survival Hopes

Leeds pulled off a shock victory at Old Trafford, securing their first league win there since 1981 and taking a major step towards Premier League survival on a disappointing night for Michael Carrick’s Manchester United.

Minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe watched on unimpressed as United delivered a poor first-half performance. Although they showed signs of improvement after the break, it came only after Lisandro Martinez making his return from a two-month injury layoff was sent off for an incident involving Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Leeds made a flying start, with Noah Okafor scoring just five minutes in before doubling the lead before half-time, his effort deflecting off Leny Yoro and into the net.

Martinez’s red card, awarded after a VAR review, seemed to ignite United’s response. Casemiro pulled a goal back, assisted by Bruno Fernandes, who recorded his 17th assist of the season just three shy of the Premier League record.

Despite being down to 10 men, United pushed hard for an equaliser. Benjamin Sesko came close twice in quick succession, but was denied by Karl Darlow and a crucial goal-line clearance from Calvert-Lewin.

However, the equaliser never came, as United suffered their first home defeat under Carrick.

The result leaves United heading into Saturday’s clash with Chelsea potentially without Harry Maguire due to suspension knowing a loss could see their cushion reduced to just four points over Liam Rosenior’s inconsistent side with five matches remaining.

Meanwhile, Leeds will face bottom-placed Wolves at Elland Road, aware that a victory could move them nine points clear of the relegation zone before their rivals play again.
