Manchester City’s dominance suffered a crushing blow within 24 hours as they lost their grip on the Premier League title amid growing uncertainty over the future of manager Pep Guardiola.
Reports surrounding Guardiola’s possible exit emerged on Monday night, and City’s 1-1 draw against Bournemouth the following day confirmed Arsenal as Premier League champions for the first time in 22 years, with the Gunners holding a four-point lead heading into the final round of fixtures.
Although Guardiola insists no final decision has been made, the expectation remains that the Spaniard could bring an end to his hugely successful decade-long spell at City after discussions with chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak. Former City assistant Enzo Maresca is reportedly being lined up as a potential replacement.
Speaking on Sunday’s clash with Aston Villa, Guardiola said he still has one year remaining on his contract and prefers to avoid discussing his future during an active campaign. He stressed that any decision would first be discussed privately with the club’s hierarchy at the end of the season.
The 55-year-old also highlighted that his focus remains solely on guiding City through the closing stages of the campaign after already securing both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup this season.
Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta finally delivered the title many supporters had craved since Arsène Wenger led the famous “Invincibles” side to glory in 2004. The North London side will now turn their attention to the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on 30 May.
Guardiola was gracious in defeat, congratulating Arsenal, Arteta and the club’s staff for what he described as a fully deserved Premier League triumph after a season of consistent excellence.
