Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League crown after defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties in a thrilling final at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.
Arsenal entered the match in high spirits following their first Premier League triumph in 22 years and were aiming to complete a memorable domestic and European double. The Gunners made a dream start when Kai Havertz broke through PSG’s defence and fired home in the sixth minute to give his side an early lead.
However, the French champions gradually asserted control, dominating possession and forcing Arsenal’s backline, led by Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba, into a series of crucial interventions.
Mikel Arteta handed starts to youngsters Myles Lewis-Skelly and Cristhian Mosquera, but Arsenal’s advantage was wiped out when Mosquera brought down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the penalty area. Ousmane Dembele stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick to level the contest.
PSG continued to dictate the tempo and created several chances to win the game in normal time, with Kvaratskhelia and Vitinha both going close. Arsenal, meanwhile, felt they were denied a late penalty after Noni Madueke went down under pressure from Nuno Mendes, but referee Daniel Siebert waved away the appeals and booked both Arteta and Declan Rice for their protests.
With neither side able to find a winner in extra time, the final was decided by a penalty shootout. Gabriel’s missed effort proved costly as PSG held their nerve to claim a 4-3 shootout victory and lift the Champions League trophy for the second consecutive season.
Following the final whistle, PSG captain Marquinhos shared a heartfelt moment with his fellow Brazilian Gabriel, offering words of comfort as Arsenal’s long wait for European glory continued.
