The Kogi State Government has announced the immediate suspension of the Echane Festival in Ebiraland over security concerns.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Fanwo.

The statement said the decision followed credible intelligence reports indicating that activities associated with the festival have the potential to threaten public peace, safety and security, as well as lead to a breakdown of law and order in parts of Kogi Central Senatorial District.

“While the Government recognises and respects the cultural significance of traditional festivals and their role in preserving the rich heritage of our people, the security of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government and must take precedence over all other considerations,” the statement read.

According to the statement Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has directed the immediate suspension of the festival in the interest of peace and public safety.

The Governor also directed all security agencies operating in the State to ensure strict compliance with the directive.

“Any individual or group found organizing, participating in or promoting activities connected with the suspended festival will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” the statement added.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of lives and property, assuring residents that it would continue to take proactive measures to preserve the peace for which Kogi State is known.

It also urges traditional rulers, community leaders, opinion leaders, youth groups and residents of the affected communities to cooperate with security agencies and support ongoing efforts to maintain peace and stability across the State.
