Andoni Iraola says he fully understands the expectations that come with managing Liverpool and is prepared to embrace the challenge after being confirmed as the club’s new head coach.
The 43-year-old Spaniard has signed a two-year contract to replace Arne Slot, who was dismissed on Saturday just one year after leading Liverpool to the Premier League title.
Iraola arrives at Anfield following an impressive spell with Bournemouth, where he guided the Cherries to their best-ever Premier League finish. Bournemouth ended the season in sixth place, only three points and one position behind Liverpool, securing qualification for next season’s Europa League.
The former Athletic Bilbao midfielder had announced in April that he would leave Bournemouth this summer, with Crystal Palace and AC Milan both linked to him before Liverpool made their move.
Despite Liverpool qualifying for next season’s Champions League, the Reds endured a disappointing league campaign, finishing on 60 points their lowest total since the 2015-16 season and 25 points behind champions Arsenal.
Speaking after his appointment, Iraola expressed excitement about taking charge at one of football’s biggest clubs.
“I’m really excited because Liverpool is a massive club, one of the biggest in the world,” he said. “You don’t need many reasons to be attracted to Liverpool. Liverpool is Liverpool.”
He added that the opportunity to work with elite players was a major factor behind his decision.
“Liverpool gives me the chance to coach top players, and top players give you the opportunity to fight for and win titles,” he said.
“Of course, you can’t promise everything when you arrive at a new club, but I understand where I’m coming to and what is expected. I’m ready for the challenge.”
Iraola is also reportedly interested in bringing Bournemouth assistants Tommy Elphick and Shaun Cooper with him to Merseyside as part of his coaching staff.
The Spaniard also recalled the electric atmosphere at Anfield when Federico Chiesa scored a dramatic late winner against Bournemouth last August.
“When Chiesa scored, the whole stadium erupted. It was unbelievable,” Iraola said. “Now I want to experience that feeling from the other side.”
“At every new club, you have to prove yourself and earn your place. I want to do that as quickly as possible so I can celebrate with the fans and truly feel part of the club.”
