A House of Representatives aspirant for Kosofe Federal Constituency in Lagos State, Oluremi Oluwalogbon Odunsi, has urged Nigerian youths to move beyond social media activism and actively participate in politics, insisting that meaningful leadership change can only come through direct civic engagement.
Speaking at a programme organised by the Renewed Hope Ambassadors Youth and Women Network in Abuja, Odunsi said while young Nigerians are becoming increasingly vocal about governance and accountability on social media, online commentary alone is insufficient to drive real political transformation.
According to her, true change begins when citizens translate their concerns into active participation in the democratic process through voter registration, community engagement and involvement in political structures.
“The conversation among young people is no longer silent or passive. There is a growing demand for accountability from leadership at all levels. However, becoming aware of leadership challenges and commenting passionately about them is not enough. True transformation begins when those concerns are translated into participation,” she said.
Odunsi encouraged young Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) and become active participants in elections and grassroots politics, stressing that democracy thrives when citizens are directly involved in decision-making processes.
She further urged youths to engage in political activities within their wards and local communities, noting that such involvement would enable them to contribute meaningfully to governance rather than remaining observers.
According to the aspirant, leadership is not limited to holding public office but begins with taking responsibility and participating in efforts that shape the nation’s future.
She maintained that Nigeria’s future depends on informed, registered and engaged citizens, particularly young people, who constitute a significant portion of the country’s population.
