Ghana kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in dramatic fashion, edging Panama 1-0 courtesy of a late winner from Caleb Yirenkyi in their Group L opener.
The Black Stars endured a frustrating first half and struggled to impose themselves on the contest. Panama’s disciplined defensive setup limited Ghana’s attacking threat, with the West Africans failing to register a shot on target until the closing moments of the first period.
Panama looked the more dangerous side for much of the encounter and created several promising opportunities. Thomas Christiansen’s men appeared on course to secure a valuable point after producing an organised and spirited performance against the African giants.
Ghana, however, returned from the break with renewed determination. Antoine Semenyo spearheaded the attack and continually tested Panama’s resistance as the Black Stars searched for a breakthrough.
Just when the match seemed destined to finish goalless, Ghana found the decisive moment deep into stoppage time. Semenyo played a key role in the build-up before Caleb Yirenkyi calmly finished to spark wild celebrations among Ghanaian supporters.
Panama also had opportunities of their own late in the game, with Cristian Martínez and Ismael Díaz both threatening, but neither could find the crucial touch needed to beat Ghana’s defence.
The result extends Panama’s difficult record at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Central Americans still searching for their first victory after four tournament matches.
Elsewhere in Group L, England claimed a thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia to move top of the standings. Ghana sit second following their opening win, while Panama are third.
Attention now turns to a heavyweight clash on June 23, when Ghana face group leaders England. Panama, meanwhile, will battle Croatia in a must-win encounter as they attempt to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
