As widows across the world commemorate the 2026 International Widows’ Day, the Wife of the Kogi State Governor, Hajia Sefinat Usman Ododo, has called for the implementation of stronger policies aimed at improving the lives and protecting the rights of widows across Nigeria.
In a message to mark the occasion with the theme: “Widows in Africa: Perspective on Justice, Dignity, and Economic Power,” the First Lady stressed the urgent need for comprehensive reforms that would guarantee widows greater legal recognition, safeguard their fundamental rights, and protect them from social and economic vulnerabilities.
Hajia Sefinat Ododo emphasized that strict legal frameworks prohibiting discriminatory cultural practices, as well as the effective enforcement of inheritance and property rights, are now more critical than ever in addressing the harsh realities faced by widows across the country.
Beyond legal protection, she identified economic empowerment as a pathway to restoring dignity and independence, advocating increased access to skills acquisition centres, micro-credit facilities, and sustainable employment opportunities to improve the living conditions of vulnerable women.
Reflecting on her stewardship since assuming office, Mrs. Ododo noted that the welfare of widows has remained a key priority of her office.
She said this commitment has been demonstrated through various empowerment programmes that provide direct cash grants, vocational training, and other support mechanisms aimed at promoting self-reliance among widows.
The First Lady pledged to further expand these interventions through her office and the Ohunene Empowerment Initiative, ensuring that welfare programmes reach widows at the grassroots level.
She reaffirmed that the administration of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo remains committed to advancing policies and programmes that guarantee the safety, security, and overall well-being of widows in Kogi State.
While felicitating with widows across Kogi State on the occasion, Hajia Sefinat Ododo urged them to remain hopeful, resilient, and steadfast in providing moral guidance and support to their families.
