President Bola Tinubu commissions the 180MW Afam II Power Plant in Rivers State, celebrating a significant achievement in Nigeria’s power sector. Completed in just 16 months by Sahara Power Group and Crescendough Nigeria Limited.
Speaking virtually during the commissioning, Tinubu hailed the project as a critical boost to Nigeria’s electricity supply, calling it a testament to the country’s resilience, innovation, and private-sector potential. He emphasized that the fully operational facility will support homes, businesses, and industrial growth while contributing to national development.

The President commended Sahara Group, First Independent Power Limited, and the Rivers State Government for their role in realizing the project. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring a stable power supply, promising continued support for investment-friendly policies and ease of doing business.
Sahara Power Group’s Managing Director, Dr. Kola Adesina, said the project’s successful execution reflects the company’s long-standing commitment to sustainable energy. He stressed that beyond the megawatts added, the project signifies lives changed, jobs created, and national progress driven by indigenous solutions.

Adesina also highlighted ongoing initiatives, including expansion of the Egbin Power Plant, innovations at Ikeja Electric, and future investments in renewable energy, underlining Sahara Group’s role as the largest private power player in Nigeria, accounting for over 20% of the country’s electricity generation.
Rivers State Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), and Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu both praised the project’s impact and fast delivery. They described it as proof that Nigerian-led ventures can drive large-scale infrastructure while promoting energy security and economic development.
