Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) to strengthen institutional collaboration and accelerate electricity sector development in Kogi State.
The agreement, signed in Abuja today, provides a framework for cooperation in key areas including technical modelling and digital system planning, energy resource mapping and data integration, capacity building, network baseline assessment and energy efficiency standards.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Secretary of KERC, Alhaji Kasim Mabo, said the partnership would enhance the Commission’s regulatory capacity and provide a platform for knowledge transfer and technical support, particularly in energy data management and regulatory compliance.
“This collaboration marks a significant step towards building a more efficient and sustainable electricity market in Kogi State. It will equip the Commission with the technical tools and expertise required to improve service delivery and strengthen sector regulation,” he said.
Also speaking, KERC’s General Manager, Strategy, Yakubu Omanayi, noted that the partnership would strengthen the Commission’s ability to conduct stress tests, energy assessments and planning exercises critical to market stability and long-term sector growth.
According to him, improved access to technical resources and data-driven planning will support efforts to expand electricity access and improve the quality of power supply across the state.
In his remarks, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, commended KERC for its proactive approach to electricity sector development, describing the Commission as a model for subnational electricity regulation.
He reaffirmed ECN’s commitment to supporting KERC through technical collaboration, capacity development and data-driven initiatives that will contribute to sustainable energy development and improved electricity services in Kogi State.
