Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group L encounter in Bissau on Tuesday.
The Wild Dogs dominated proceedings at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro, securing their second consecutive victory in the group and handing Nigeria their first defeat of the qualifying campaign.
Guinea-Bissau took the lead in the 15th minute through Franculino Djú, who curled a left-footed effort beyond Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali after receiving a pass from Renato Nhaga inside the box.
Nigeria struggled to create clear-cut chances as the hosts maintained control of the game. The Super Eagles, however, came close to finding an equaliser before half-time when Alex Iwobi played Ademola Lookman through, but Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Embadjé produced an important save to preserve his side’s lead.
Nigeria coach Eric Chelle made two changes at the break, bringing on Moses Simon and Moses Usor as the visitors looked to get back into the contest.
The substitutions failed to change the momentum, with Guinea-Bissau extending their lead in the 66th minute through Mama Baldé.
Baldé collected a pass from Mamadi Camará, drove into the Nigerian penalty area and calmly fired a low shot past Nwabali to put the hosts in a commanding position.
Nigeria’s difficult night was completed in stoppage time when Álvaro Djaló scored Guinea-Bissau’s third goal, sealing a comprehensive victory for the hosts.
The result leaves Guinea-Bissau at the top of Group L with six points from two matches, while Nigeria remain on three points after their opening-day 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar.
The defeat represents a setback for the Super Eagles as they continue their qualification campaign in a group that includes Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar, with co-hosts Tanzania already assured of a place at the 2027 tournament.
Nigeria will now look to regroup ahead of their remaining qualifying fixtures after a disappointing night in Bissau, where the Super Eagles were outplayed by the Wild Dogs.
