First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has been named Grand Patron of the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) Nigeria, a continental women’s amateur golf championship scheduled to take place in Abuja from November 2 to 7.
The honour was conferred on Tinubu by the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) during a visit to seek Federal Government support for the championship.
Speaking during the visit, Tinubu commended the association for its proposed Girls in Golf Legacy Project, which seeks to mentor and nurture 300 girls in the sport.
She said the initiative could help produce future world champions, stressing that success in golf requires discipline, commitment and dedication.
“These are characters that enhance a formidable future,” the First Lady said.
Tinubu also congratulated the association on securing the hosting rights, noting that the tournament would provide opportunities to promote tourism and stimulate economic activities in Nigeria.
Earlier, President of the Court of Appeal and Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Justice Monica Mensem, commended the First Lady for her efforts in supporting women and girls across the country.
The President of LGAN, Dr Lami Onayi Ahmed, appealed to Tinubu to endorse the championship and participate in its opening ceremony and ceremonial tee-off.
Ahmed and Mensem subsequently decorated Tinubu as Grand Patron of AACT Nigeria 2026.
Tinubu marked the commencement of her new role with a symbolic tee-off using a golf practice kit at her office.
Nigeria secured the hosting rights after a competitive bid in Morocco and is expected to welcome female golfers from about 30 countries to the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja.
The 2026 edition will be the third time Nigeria is hosting the continental championship.
