KERC Issues Mini-Grid Permits to Expand Power Access in Underserved Communities

The Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission, KERC, has issued permits to mini-grid investors to enhance access to electricity in underserved communities in the state.

The beneficiaries include Havewill Energy Limited, Prado Power Limited, Cross Boundary Limited, and Magnificent Gateway Limited.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Kogi State Commissioner for Energy and Rural Development, Engr Mohamed Abdulmutalib, congratulated the developers for meeting regulatory standards and demonstrating professionalism in the renewable energy sector.

Represented by his Technical Assistant, Isa Sule, the Commissioner emphasized that reliable and clean energy is vital for economic growth and improved livelihoods, especially in underserved rural areas.

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of KERC, Engr Ibrahim Abdwaaris explained that the permits serve as regulatory contracts, outlining developers’ rights and obligations on safety, technical standards, and quality of service.

Engr Abdwaaris added that the mini-grid regulation is part of KERC’s efforts to decentralize electricity supply and attract investment into the state power sector, with a simplified licensing process for operators generating up to one megawatt for local use.

Other commissioners, including Engr Abdulsalam Yusuf and Professor Ibrahim Abdulkarim, emphasized the state’s commitment to safety, service quality, and regulatory compliance.

They urged the developers to adhere strictly to electricity regulations, assuring that KERC has put measures in place to protect investments and ensure quality standards in service delivery are maintained.

KERC believes the initiative is expected to accelerate rural electrification, stimulate local economies, and improve living standards across Kogi State.
