President Bola Tinubu has urged member states of the United Nations to incorporate the Preamble to the UN Charter into their national constitutions, describing the move as a step toward promoting peace, justice, human dignity and stronger international cooperation.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, made this known during an informal meeting of the UN General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York ahead of President Tinubu’s participation in the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly scheduled for September.
Ibrahim, who also chairs the Budget and Appropriation Committee (Fifth Committee) of the UN General Assembly, said President Tinubu believes that adopting the UN Charter Preamble in national constitutions would reinforce the shared values upon which the United Nations was founded.
According to a statement from his media office, the President said incorporating the Charter’s preamble into national constitutions would serve as a lasting reminder of the collective responsibility of nations to uphold peace, justice, human dignity and international cooperation.
Tinubu noted that the proposal would further strengthen member states’ commitment to maintaining international peace and security, protecting fundamental human rights, promoting justice and respect for international law, advancing social progress and encouraging peaceful coexistence among nations.
The President also welcomed the continued commitment of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council—the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and Russia—to the principles and objectives of the UN Charter.
Ibrahim explained that the proposal is intended to reinforce the collective commitment of all UN member states to the ideals of the United Nations and ensure that the values enshrined in the Charter remain central to national governance.
He added that delegates at the informal General Assembly meeting applauded the proposal, describing the response as a reflection of broad support for initiatives that promote global solidarity and strengthen the founding principles of the United Nations.
According to the envoy, the initiative also highlights Nigeria’s commitment to multilateralism and its support for a stronger, more inclusive and effective United Nations dedicated to advancing peace, sustainable development and shared prosperity.
