Lionel Messi further etched his name into FIFA World Cup history on Friday night after scoring in Argentina’s victory over Cape Verde, a result that secured the defending champions a place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Argentina captain opened the scoring in the 29th minute, calmly finishing off a well-worked move to give his side the lead against the spirited World Cup debutants. The goal set Argentina on course for another important win as they continue their title defence.
Messi’s strike was historic on multiple levels, as it saw him become the first player in World Cup history to score in eight consecutive tournament appearances. The 39-year-old also broke another long-standing record by becoming the first footballer to make 30 appearances at the FIFA World Cup finals.
The veteran forward’s goal also increased his overall World Cup tally to 20 goals, further strengthening his position among the competition’s greatest-ever scorers. Of those, six have come in knockout matches, underlining his importance in high-pressure games. He also now has seven goals at the ongoing 2026 tournament, placing him firmly in contention for the Golden Boot award.
Cape Verde, making their World Cup debut, put up a brave performance against the reigning champions but were ultimately unable to find an equaliser after going behind in the first half.
Argentina managed the game professionally after taking the lead, controlling possession and limiting the opportunities of the determined African side.
The victory ensures Lionel Scaloni’s men progress to the Round of 16, where they continue their pursuit of a successful defence of the FIFA World Cup title.
Despite the defeat, Cape Verde earned praise for their spirited display in what was a historic first appearance at the global tournament.
