Kogi NGOs Calls for Stronger Governance, Transparency on Democracy Day

The Kogi NGOs Network (KONGONET) has called on the nation to reflect on its democratic journey, emphasizing the importance of resilience, good governance, and transparency. As citizens across the country celebrate June 12, KONGONET urges leaders, particularly in Kogi State, to strengthen their commitment to open government practices and prioritize accountability to ensure a more inclusive and effective democracy.

In a region where the threat of military rule has often loomed large, Nigeria’s continued commitment to democratic principles stands as a beacon of hope. Despite the volatile political landscape across West Africa, Nigerians have consistently defended their rights and freedoms, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the ideals of democracy. KONGONET has recognized this spirit of resilience, urging citizens and leaders alike to remain steadfast in their pursuit of good governance and democratic integrity.

On this significant day, KONGONET has called on elected officials across Nigeria, particularly in Kogi State, to reaffirm their dedication to making democracy more meaningful to ordinary citizens. The organization emphasizes that governance must be transparent, inclusive, and focused on addressing the needs of the people. Only through participatory democracy, where citizens are actively engaged in decision-making processes, can Nigeria achieve the full potential of its democratic system.

The statement also directed particular attention to the leadership of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State. KONGONET commended the governor for his commitment to fostering open government practices, noting that transparency in governance is crucial for earning the trust of the people. The network called for the full implementation of the Open Government Partnership (OGP) State Action Plan (SAP), a promise made by the governor during the unveiling of the document. The success of this initiative, they argued, is vital for promoting accountability and improving citizen-government relations.

Moreover, KONGONET urged the government to prioritize the renovation and equipping of the OGP Secretariat in Kogi State. A functional and well-resourced secretariat is essential for the effective monitoring and execution of the Open Government initiative, ensuring that citizens’ voices are genuinely heard and their rights protected. Without a robust mechanism for transparency, the full benefits of democratic governance cannot be realized, the network stressed.
