Kogi Assembly Passes Landmark Truck Restriction, Land Use, Climate, Electoral Reform Laws

Kogi State House of Assembly has passed four critical bills into law, including a landmark legislation restricting the movement of heavy-duty trucks within Lokoja metropolis.

The legislative action, taken during Tuesday’s plenary session, reflects a broader effort to improve urban development planning, environmental policy, and governance across the state.

One of the most anticipated bills now passed prohibits heavy-duty vehicles from moving freely within the Lokoja city limits at certain times of the day.

This restriction aims to reduce road congestion, enhance public safety, and preserve key infrastructure within the state capital.

In a broader legislative context, the House also passed a bill repealing the Kogi State Local Government Electoral Law of 2004, replacing it with a new and updated 2025 Electoral Law. This reform is expected to strengthen the framework for local elections, enhance transparency, and promote good governance at the grassroots.

The lawmakers further approved the establishment of the Kogi State Agency for Climate Change, creating a legal framework for a state-level body focused on addressing climate-related matters, environmental protection, and sustainability planning.

Another milestone bill passed was the Kogi State Bureau of Lands Law, which formalizes the creation of a centralized agency responsible for land administration, planning, and documentation, marking a significant step towards improved land use and administration in the state.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Umar Yusuf, commended the dedication of members, describing the legislative output as a demonstration of their shared commitment to development of Kogi State.

He applauded the quality of debate and the diligence shown by members throughout the consideration of the bills.
