Nigeria Wins Four Gold, 12 Medals at African Athletics Championship

Nigeria won 12 medals at the 24th African Athletics Championships after the women’s 4x400m relay team claimed gold on the final day of the competition.

The team of Esther Okon, Toheebat Jimoh, Jecinter Lawrence and Patience Okon-George defended Nigeria’s title in the event after finishing first with a time of 3:29.25 on Sunday. Ethiopia came second, while Kenya finished third.

Nigeria dominated the race from start to finish and crossed the line far ahead of the other teams. The victory gave Nigeria its fourth gold medal of the championship.

At the end of the competition, Nigeria finished with four gold, five silver and three bronze medals to place fourth on the overall medal table behind Kenya, South Africa and Ethiopia.

Kenya finished top with 17 medals, including six gold, while South Africa also won six gold medals. Ethiopia came third with five gold medals.

Rosemary Chukwuma won Nigeria’s only other medal on the final day after claiming silver in the women’s 200m with a time of 23.60 seconds. Ivory Coast’s Maboundou Kone won gold in the event.

Chukwuma had an impressive tournament, winning three medals in total. She earlier won gold in the women’s 4x100m relay and silver in the women’s 100m race.

World record holder Tobi Amusan also won gold for Nigeria in the women’s 100m hurdles after finishing in 12.83 seconds.

Nigeria’s mixed 4x400m relay team also won gold, while the women’s 4x100m relay team added another gold medal.

In the silver medal category, Oyesade Olatoye finished second in the women’s hammer throw, Divine Oladipo won silver in the discus event, and Nigeria’s men’s 4x100m relay team also claimed silver.

Adaobi Tabugbo won bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles, while Chidera Ezeakor also secured bronze in the men’s 100m race.
