Former England international Raheem Sterling has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after a crash involving his Lamborghini on the M3 motorway in Hampshire.
The 31-year-old footballer, who recently completed a short spell with Dutch club Feyenoord, is alleged to have collided with motorway barriers near the Minley Interchange on Thursday morning. No other vehicles were involved in the incident, and no injuries were reported.
Hampshire Police confirmed officers attended the scene shortly before 9 a.m. following reports of a Lamborghini crashing into the barriers. The driver, described as a 31-year-old man from Berkshire, was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs, dangerous driving, possession of a Class C drug, and failing to provide a specimen.
Sterling has since been released on bail as investigations continue.
A source close to the former Manchester City and Chelsea winger acknowledged the arrest but maintained there is “no proof” that drugs were present in his system. The source also stated that Sterling has faced a challenging period in recent years and has felt increasingly overlooked within the game.
The winger joined Feyenoord in February after mutually agreeing to terminate the final 18 months of his Chelsea contract, which was reportedly worth more than £300,000 per week. His time in the Netherlands was brief, making eight appearances before the end of the season.
Sterling spent four years at Chelsea after arriving from Manchester City in 2022 and also enjoyed a loan spell at Arsenal. Prior to that, he established himself as one of England’s most successful players during a trophy-laden spell at Manchester City, where he won four Premier League titles following his move from Liverpool in 2015.
On the international stage, Sterling earned 82 caps for England, with his most recent appearance coming during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
