President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding Nigeria’s road infrastructure with the flag-off of Section I of the Akwanga–Kaduna–Jos segment of the 700-kilometre Akwanga–Bauchi–Gombe–Biu–Maiduguri Superhighway.
Represented at the ceremony on Wednesday by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, the President described the project as another milestone under the Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at improving connectivity, boosting economic activities and enhancing road safety.
Tinubu said the 700-kilometre superhighway, approved by the Federal Executive Council, is being executed in phases to ensure timely completion. He noted that the newly flagged-off 125-kilometre Akwanga–Kaduna–Jos section follows the launch of the Gombe–Biu section on June 4, 2026.
According to the President, the highway comprises five sections: Akwanga–Kaduna–Jos, Jos–Bauchi, Bauchi–Gombe, Gombe–Biu and Biu–Maiduguri. He said the project is expected to improve transportation, facilitate trade and promote socio-economic development across the North-Central and North-East regions.
Tinubu also highlighted progress on other major road projects, including the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway and the Trans-Sahara Trade Route, noting that construction is advancing across several sections.
He expressed confidence that the projects would create jobs, attract investment and strengthen the country’s economy. The President also directed the Minister of Works, the Surveyor-General of the Federation and governors of the affected states to preserve adequate setbacks along the road corridors for future expansion and supporting infrastructure.
Tinubu further urged contractors handling the projects to employ more Nigerian youths, promote skills transfer and contribute to long-term national development.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, commended President Tinubu for prioritising infrastructure despite economic challenges.
He said road construction and rehabilitation projects are ongoing across the 36 states of the federation, adding that the administration remains committed to delivering durable road networks that will enhance national unity, improve connectivity and support sustainable economic growth.
