A Chief Magistrate in Ibadan, Mrs. Olabisi Ogunkanmi, has ordered the remand of Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, alongside Oriyomi Hamzat, owner of Agidigbo FM, and Bashorun Islamic High School Principal, Fasasi Abdulahi. The trio is being held at the Agodi Correctional Facility, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) of the Oyo State Ministry of Justice.
The suspects were arraigned at the Iyaganku Chief Magistrate Court 1 on Tuesday, facing a four-count charge that includes conspiracy, negligence leading to death, and failure to provide adequate security and medical facilities. These charges stem from the tragic stampede in Ibadan that claimed multiple lives during a public event.
Supporters of Oriyomi Hamzat gathered at the court premises in a show of solidarity, creating a tense atmosphere. However, a heavy security presence prevented the situation from spiraling out of control. The tension escalated briefly when police vehicles began transporting the suspects from the court, but the situation remained under control.
The Ibadan stampede, which has drawn widespread criticism and calls for accountability, continues to be a focal point for public debate. In response, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has assured the public of justice for the victims while urging calm and promising reforms to prevent future occurrences.
