Real Madrid Title Hopes Fade After Late Betis Equaliser

Real Madrid suffered a major setback in their pursuit of the La Liga title after conceding a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Real Betis on Friday night.

The result leaves their already slim title chances hanging by a thread with just a handful of games remaining in the season.

The visitors appeared to be on course for a crucial win after Vinícius Júnior opened the scoring in the 17th minute at the Estadio La Cartuja in Seville. The Brazilian forward reacted quickest after a long-range effort from Federico Valverde slipped through the grasp of Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Valles, allowing him to tap home from close range.

Despite taking the lead, Madrid failed to capitalise on several chances to extend their advantage. Kylian Mbappé saw a goal ruled out for offside and later missed a clear opportunity, while Vinícius and Jude Bellingham were also unable to convert their chances as the game remained delicately poised.

Betis gradually grew into the contest and tested Madrid’s defence repeatedly, only to be denied by a series of impressive saves from goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. Their persistence eventually paid off deep into stoppage time when Héctor Bellerín capitalised on a defensive lapse to fire home a late equaliser, sending the home crowd into celebration.

The draw leaves Madrid eight points behind league leaders FC Barcelona, who could further extend their advantage depending on their result against Getafe. With only five matches left, Madrid’s hopes of reclaiming the title now appear increasingly unlikely.

Having already exited the UEFA Champions League, the Spanish giants are facing the prospect of ending the season without silverware, a rare outcome in recent history. The pressure continues to mount on manager Álvaro Arbeloa as his side prepares for crucial fixtures, including a decisive clash against Barcelona that may ultimately confirm their title fate.
