The Kogi State NGOs Network (KONGONET) has mourned the death of former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, describing his tenure as one marked by notable public investments and an amiable disposition.
Idris, who governed the state from 2003 to 2012, died on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at the age of 77.
In a condolence statement signed by its Chairperson, Hamza Aliyu, on Sunday, KONGONET said the former governor would be remembered for projects executed during his administration across various sectors of the state.
The network listed the Greater Lokoja Water Scheme, Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Confluence Stadium, Lokoja International Market, housing schemes, road infrastructure and investments in education and public institutions among projects associated with the former governor’s administration.
KONGONET said many of the facilities remain important reference points in discussions about the development of Kogi State and the need to preserve public assets for future generations.
The organisation also highlighted Idris’ calm, accessible and amiable disposition, saying his public persona reflected a leadership style that valued relationships, peaceful engagement and accommodation of people from different communities and backgrounds.
According to KONGONET, such qualities remain relevant in a diverse state like Kogi, where citizens need opportunities to engage their leaders without unnecessary barriers.
The network said Idris’ death should also renew attention to institutional continuity, stressing that public projects and policies could only outlive individual administrations when successive governments maintain, improve and adapt them to changing needs.
It added that one meaningful way to honour past leaders was to protect useful public investments and ensure they continued to deliver value to citizens.
KONGONET expressed condolences to the Idris family, the people of Omala Local Government Area, the Kogi State Government and residents of the state.
The organisation prayed for the forgiveness of Idris’ shortcomings and for Almighty Allah to grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, while asking for strength and fortitude for his family and the people of Kogi State.
