The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised concerns over funding for the 2027 general elections, while the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has warned that officers found guilty of electoral misconduct will be investigated and punished.

The two officials spoke on Wednesday in Owerri, Imo State, during the sixth Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers (CARSPO 2026), which focused on strengthening election security ahead of the 2027 polls.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, said adequate funding was critical to the commission’s ability to deploy personnel, electoral materials and other resources required for the smooth conduct of elections nationwide.

He noted that INEC’s responsibilities extend beyond conducting elections to include voter registration and the management of elections at presidential, National Assembly, governorship and State House of Assembly levels.

Amupitan also stressed the importance of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) in coordinating INEC and security agencies, urging authorities to provide the resources needed for effective election preparations.

On his part, Disu directed police officers to remain neutral and professional throughout the electoral process.

He warned officers against taking sides, harassing voters, colluding with political actors or abusing their powers during the elections, saying anyone found culpable would face investigation and disciplinary action.

The IGP said the police would work closely with INEC and other security agencies through joint exercises and improved communication to strengthen security before and during the elections.

He further stressed that the use of force by officers on election duty must be lawful, proportionate and treated as a last resort.

The 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while the governorship and State House of Assembly elections will hold on February 6, 2027.
