A 300-level student of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Abdullahi Adam Usman, has developed a mobile application to simplify access to information on the Federal Government’s Student Loan Scheme (NELFUND).
According to a statement issued on Friday by the Public Affairs Directorate, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, ABU, Zaria, Usman developed the independent civic technology initiative, known as “My NELFUND,” to improve understanding of the scheme.
Usman, of the Department of Political Science and International Studies, designed the app with an eligibility checker, loan repayment and moratorium calculator, FAQs and a knowledge base.
It also directs users to NELFUND’s official channels for actual applications and is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
The app currently supports English and Hausa, with plans to introduce more Nigerian languages in subsequent releases.
Usman said the project was designed to make government policy information easier to understand, particularly statutory and institutional requirements relating to the loan scheme.
Data from Google Analytics showed that between August 27 and September 23, 2026, the app recorded 597 first-time users, 595 active users, 4,968 screen views and 4,744 user-engagement activities.
The eligibility section recorded 938 visits, while the loan calculator recorded 664 visits. Users also completed 528 eligibility assessments and carried out 1,470 loan calculations during the period.
The platform recorded users from 17 countries, with Nigeria accounting for 533 users and the United States 21 users.
Usman said the next phase would focus on expanding language options, improving educational tools and extending the platform’s usefulness to more Nigerian students and citizens.
Commenting on the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, congratulated the student and said the app would provide users with greater clarity and enable them to access relevant information from different locations within and outside the country.
Prof. Ahmed described the project as a form of national service and commended Usman for creating a solution that supports students and contributes to a national vision.
He assured the student of the university’s continued support towards improving the project.
