Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, is in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission following interrogation over an alleged ₦432bn corruption probe linked to his eight years in office.

The former governor was invited to the commission’s Abuja headquarters on Monday, where he was questioned for several hours.

The investigation is based on a 2024 report of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, which accused El-Rufai’s administration of misappropriating loans, violating due process in contract awards and plunging the state into heavy debt. EFCC sources confirmed late Monday that the former governor remained in custody, while the agency’s spokesman declined to comment on the next line of action.

Separately, the Federal Government has filed criminal charges against El-Rufai at the Federal High Court, Abuja, over the alleged unlawful interception of phone communications belonging to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

The charges followed comments made by El-Rufai during a television interview, which prosecutors say raise serious cybercrime and national security concerns.

In another development, the Department of State Services has reopened investigations into the 2019 disappearance of activist Abubakar Idris, popularly known as Dadiyata, reportedly extending the probe to El-Rufai and his sons.

The developments have triggered protests in Abuja and Kaduna, as El-Rufai continues to deny all allegations while investigations intensify.
