EU Proposes Lagos-Ajaokuta Water Transport Hub

The European Union has expressed interest in investing in a water transportation hub linking Lagos-Ikorodu with Ajaokuta in Kogi State.

The EU delegation, led by Mr. Massimo De Luca, Head of Partnership, EU to Nigeria and ECOWAS, made this known when he visited the Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, in Lokoja.

Receiving the delegation on behalf of the Governor, the Deputy Governor, Comrade Joel Salifu, welcomed the proposed investment and assured the team that Kogi State was ready to partner with genuine investors to harness development potential in the state.

Mr. De Luca said the proposed project was aimed at reducing pressure on Nigeria’s roads by moving more bulk goods through the waterways.

He explained that the project would involve SeaLink and other local and international financial partners, including NEXIM Bank and European financial institutions.

According to him, other major companies could also participate in the project as it develops.

The delegation requested 50 hectares of land in Kogi State, with the necessary Certificate of Occupancy, to serve as the company’s operational base.

Responding, the Deputy Governor said the proposal would undergo the appropriate government processes, including consideration by the Kogi State Economic Council, before a final decision would be reached.

Comrade Salifu said he would present the request of the team for consideration, assuring the delegation that the state government would communicate its official position after the necessary consultations.
