PSV Humble Liverpool at Anfield to Deepen Reds’ Champions League Woes

Liverpool’s struggles deepened with a dismal home loss to PSV in the Champions League.

The out-of-form Reds have now suffered nine defeats in their last 12 games across all competitions, as the Dutch visitors dismantled them at Anfield.

Despite Arne Slot’s recent domestic woes – including two heavy losses – the Champions League had offered some relief, but even that respite vanished with this latest setback.

Three wins in four matches, including a brilliant victory over Real Madrid last time out, had put Liverpool in a strong position in the league phase.

But defeat here left Slot facing serious questions about the current state of this team and just how he is going to fix it.

The visitors went ahead after just six minutes, Virgil van Dijk needlessly sticking his arm in the air in an attempt to claim a foul, but instead giving away a penalty for handball, which Ivan Perisic calmly slotted home.

Dominic Szoboszlai pulled Liverpool level 10 minutes later, capitalizing on a rebound after Cody Gakpo’s shot was parried by goalkeeper Matej Kovár, leaving the Hungarian with a simple tap-in.

Liverpool, desperate to reverse their poor run, showed signs of life. Gakpo came close again, and van Dijk saw a powerful header crash off the crossbar.

But PSV regained the lead when Mauro Junior split the defense with a brilliant pass, allowing Guus Til to slot past Alisson despite Milos Kerkez’s best efforts.

The visitors extended their advantage as substitute Couhaib Driouech pounced on a rebound from Ricardo Pepi’s effort, sending the away fans into celebration.

Driouech then struck again in stoppage time, calmly finishing into the bottom corner after a rapid counterattack, securing PSV’s first win over an English club since beating Tottenham in 2008.

The result lifts PSV to 15th in the standings, while Liverpool slide to 13th and face mounting pressure in their push for a top-eight finish.
